On the surface, it looks like yet another generic survival- and crafting-oriented experience with a veneer of creepy ambience. Here's hoping the devs can get their in-house engine working on consoles so more people can experience it.Ĭhernobylite is a weird game but one I quickly grew to love. Wildermyth is continuously updated, both mechanically and narratively, so I always find myself marvelling at the story permutations and seemingly endless selection of random encounters. I watch them grow into powerful heroes, have children during periods of peace (who can become new adventurers), find love, grow old, retire peacefully, or die heroically to pull their party back from unwinnable odds. Wildermyth is a game I keep returning to for another campaign, often pulling veteran characters into my party roster.

Of course, this is all within a game that has no voice acting and a "simple" visual style, but the results are impressive (and it helps the turn-based combat is a satisfying, streamlined XCOM-lite experience). This ensures all future narrative events - which can include new campaigns if you save your favourite characters to a repository - reflect their past interactions. These options are, of course, familiar to RPG fans - but Wildermyth's systems allow them to take it much, much further than any curated experience by generating a comprehensive and uncannily consistent history for every character. This can be as simple as defining whether party members are adversarial or lovers (either of which offers combat benefits) taking a safe or risky action during a random encounter deciding whether your character goes out in a blaze of glory or survives as a cripple or deciding on the outcome of a major story beat (some of which you can fail and still progress the adventure in an altered world). These all have an overarching narrative, but it’s the dynamic storytelling system that elevates the experience.Įvery campaign features a shared overworld, core gameplay mechanics (think exploration, combat, and character progression) but the minute-to-minute narrative progression pulls from a massive repository of story panels, most of which allow the player to make a choice that affects their party. The engine, with its gorgeous papercraft-style props and comic panels, functions as the base for several adventure modules. Developed by a small team with a focus on dynamic narrative systems, it plays like a choose-your-own-adventure visual-novel combined turn-based tactical battler (with hints of conventional party-based RPG mechanics like improving your characters and gear). Wildermyth is an RPG that received, and continues to receive, far too little attention since it launched in mid-2021.

This feature aims to highlight some of those games that we’ve got around to playing but might not have reviewed. Unfortunately, that often means dozens of indie titles fly under the radar every month without the recognition they deserve. Simply keeping on top of the steady release of “AAA” games is challenging enough these days, with a larger market than ever before and increasingly large studios trying to sate that demand.
